UFC 229 is an evening few who witnessed will ever forget.
Khabib Nurmagomedov’s UFC lightweight title defense against Conor McGregor at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Oct. 6, 2018 was the most-purchased UFC pay-per-view of all-time, with a reported buy rate of 2.4 million. The gate of nearly $17.2M was the highest ever for an MMA bout in Nevada.
And while the well-documented grudge between the two built up epic interest in the bout, when they got into the cage, well, McGregor looked like a fighter who had not competed in an MMA matchup in nearly two years. While McGregor had his moments, it was Nurmagomedov’s night, as he controlled the bout most of the way before finishing things with a submission in the fourth round.
After the fight, of course, things got even crazier, as the champion leapt out of the cage at McGregor training partner Dillon Danis, precipitating a wild brawl which led to suspensions on both competitors and several others involved.
