Before Dustin Poirier wore UFC gold, he had to take care of business with Eddie Alvarez.
The first time Poirier tangled with the former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion ended in a no-contest at UFC 211, the bout ruled so after Alvarez landed knees to the downed Poirier.
Then they ran it back at UFC on FOX 30 on July 28, 2018, and this time, it was indeed a contest. Poirier and Alvarez went back and forth for the better part of two rounds in Calgary before Poirier got the TKO finish at 4:05 of the second frame.
Poirier’s next fight was his interim title victory over UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway, which leads us back to the present.
“The Diamond” meets UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 242 on Sept. 7 in a title unification bout in Abu Dhabi.
