UFC 241 post-event facts: Stipe Miocic, Daniel Cormier shatter heavyweight striking record

The UFC made its return to Southern California on Saturday for UFC 241, which took place at Honda Center in Anaheim with a main card that aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+/UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, Stipe Miocic (19-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) took back the UFC heavyweight title he held for more than two years and a record three title defenses. He rallied to score a devastating fourth-round knockout of Daniel Cormier (22-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) in a fight that made history for its remarkable output from both sides.

The UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance payout for the event totaled $219,000.

Debuting fighters went 1-0 on the card.

Miocic, Khama Worthy, Paulo Costa and Yoel Romero earned $50,000 UFC 241 fight-night bonuses.

UFC 241 drew an announced attendance of 17,304 for a live gate of $3,237,032.

Betting favorites went 6-6 on the card.

Betting favorites fell to 12-14 (one fight had one even odds) in UFC headliners this year.

Total fight time for the 12-bout card was 2:42:38.

Main card

Miocic became the fourth heavyweight in UFC history to have multiple championship reigns.

Miocic’s five UFC title fight victories are second most in heavyweight history behind Randy Couture (six).

Miocic’s 13 victories in UFC heavyweight competition are tied for fourth most in divisional history behind Andrei Arlovski (17), Frank Mir (16) and Junior Dos Santos (15).

Miocic’s nine knockout victories in UFC heavyweight competition are tied for fourth most in divisional history. Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez and Derrick Lewis share the record (10).

Miocic’s stoppage victory despite a -58 significant strike deficit is the second largest comeback in a UFC title fight behind Anderson Silva’s win over Chael Sonnen at UFC 117 (-60).

Miocic and Cormier combined for 304 significant strikes landed to set a new single-fight record for a UFC heavyweight title fight.

Miocic’s nine fight-night bonuses for UFC heavyweight bouts are the most in divisional history.

Cormier suffered the first heavyweight loss of his career. He fell to 15-1 in the weight class.

Cormier suffered the first official knockout loss of his career. His knockout to Jon Jones at UFC 214 was overturned to a no-contest.

Nate Diaz (20-11 MMA, 15-9 UFC) improved to 4-3 in UFC welterweight competition.

Diaz earned his first decision victory since Dec. 30, 2011 – a span of 2,787 days and nine fights.

Anthony Pettis (22-9 MMA, 9-8 UFC) has alternated wins and losses over his past nine fights.

Pettis fell to 1-1 since he moved up to the UFC welterweight division in March 2019.

Pettis fell to 4-7 in his past 11 UFC appearance dating back to when he lost the UFC lightweight title in March 2015.

Pettis has suffered six of his nine career losses by decision.

Costa’s (13-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) five-fight UFC winning streak in middleweight competition is the third longest active streak in the division behind Robert Whittaker (eight) and Israel Adesanya (six).

Costa earned the first decision victory of his career.

Romero (13-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) suffered consecutive losses for the first time in his career. He hasn’t earned a victory since February 2018.

Romero fell to 1-3 in his past four fights dating back to July 2017.

Romero has suffered all three of his UFC losses by decision.

Gabriel Benitez (21-7 MMA, 5-3 UFC) suffered the first knockout loss of his career.

Derek Brunson’s (20-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) 11 victories since 2012 in UFC middleweight competition are the most in the division.

Ian Heinisch (13-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) suffered the first decision loss of his career.

Preliminary card

Devonte Smith (10-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has suffered both of his career losses by knockout.

Raphael Assuncao (27-7 MMA, 11-4 UFC) fell to 11-3 since he dropped to the UFC bantamweight division in August. 2011.

Assuncao has suffered both of his bantamweight losses by decision.

Drakkar Klose (11-1-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) has earned all five of his UFC victories by decision.

Christos Giagos (17-8 MMA, 3-4 UFC) fell to 2-2 since he returned to the UFC for a second stint in September 2018.

Casey Kenney (13-1-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has earned both of his UFC victories by decision.

Manny Bermudez (14-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) had his 14-fight winning streak snapped for the first defeat of his career.

Hannah Cifers (10-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has earned both of her UFC victories by decision.

Jodie Esquibel’s (6-6 MMA, 0-4 UFC) four-fight losing skid is the longest of her career. She hasn’t earned a victory since May 2017.f

Esquibel has suffered five of her six career losses by decision.

Kyung Ho Kang (16-8 MMA, 5-2 UFC) improved to 3-1 since he returned to competition from a nearly 3.5-year layoff in January 2018.

Kang has completed at least one takedown in seven of his eight UFC appearances.

Brandon Davis (10-7 MMA, 2-4 UFC) fell to 2-4 in his past six fights dating back to January 2018.

Davis has suffered three of his four UFC losses by decision.

Sabina Mazo (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has earned five of her seven career victories by decision.

Shana Dobson (3-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has suffered all three of her career losses by decision.
