A grueling “Fight of the Night” has UFC middleweight Paulo Costa facing a long medical suspension.
According to the California State Athletic Commission, Costa needs clearance for a potentially fractured right foot following his decision win over Yoel Romero at UFC 241.
MMA Junkie on Monday requested and received medical suspensions from the CSAC, which regulated this past Saturday’s pay-per-view event at Honda Center in Anaheim.
Costa’s manager, Wallid Ismail, denied his fighter sustained any fractures. He said Costa was transported to a local hospital and cleared by X-ray after a three-hour stay. Romero also didn’t emerge unscathed. Per CSAC, he needs doctor’s clearance for a fracture to his right ribs.
Both middleweights received a $50,000 bonus from the UFC for a thrilling three-round fight won by Costa, which could determine the next challenger for the title.
In other suspensions, Daniel Cormier is benched for 45 days with 30 days no contact after a knockout loss to newly re-crowned heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who received an identical suspension for a left eye laceration.
