UEFA to consider taking Champions League final off Turkey due to military action in Syria

UEFA will consider moving this season's Champions League final out of Istanbul due to Turkey's on-going military in Syria during the next executive committee meeting in December.

Italian sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora wrote to the governing body questioning whether it was appropriate to let Turkey host one of the biggest club football games in the world.

UEFA refused to comment on the letter and vice president Michele Uva told an Italian radio station (via AP News ) that it was "absolutely premature to talk about sanctions," but the situation is set to be evaluated when the executive committee next meet in December.

In his letter to UEFA, the Italian sports minister said: "We know well that the seriousness of what is happening in Syria will not be resolved with this act [removing Turkey as Champions League hosts] but we are all aware of the importance (political, media, economic, cultural) that belongs to one of the most important sporting events in the world."

The venue for the 2020 Champions League final is Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium, which was picked last year over Lisbon's Stadium of Light in Portugal.

The city was also the host of Liverpool's UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea in August, which took place at Besiktas' Vodafone Park stadium.
