UEFA 'Super Champions League' talks get underway as Scottish clubs watch developments closely

Talks over the shape of a new 'Super Champions League' beyond 2024 are underway after key members of the European Club Association met with their counterparts on the UEFA Executive Committee.

Scottish clubs are watching the high-powered discussions closely with a number of radical changes to the Champions League and Europa League having been mooted.

Celtic chief Peter Lawwell - a board member of the ECA - was pictured in Amsterdam on Monday for a crunch two-day summit on the issue and joined representatives from 10 other teams at the organisation's agm.

Twenty-four hours later ECA chairman, Andrea Agnelli, updated members on developments and confirmed discussions had focused on an initial exchange of ideas around UEFA club competitions post-2024.

He said: “We have now launched the process to develop a vision for the future of UEFA Club competitions post-2024.

"This is the start of a journey that will see further and deep engagement with all professional game stakeholders, prior to reaching any formal decisions.

"We are the centrepiece of world football and we must drive change. There will be a new Super-Champions League in cooperation with UEFA."

Lawwell is keen to ensure Celtic remain key stakeholders in any decisions which are made.

Reports have claimed a number of radical changes to the Champions League are in the pipeline, including introducing a promotion and relegation system and moving games from midweek to the weekend.

UEFA are also proposing a third competition that would split up the 96 competing clubs evenly through the Champions League, Europa League and a third-tier competition.

Scottish sides fear being further sidelined in European tournaments as the continents' elite clubs push for a European Super League.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has rubbished the move, describing it as "out of the question". But the proposal remains real with even a potential breakaway from the governing body being floated.

Celtic faced four rounds to qualify for this season's Champions League group stage but fell at the third hurdle.

Scotland's champions have found their pathway to the lucrative groups increasingly difficult despite England and other big nations having as many as four clubs qualify directly into the group stage.

This season's Premiership champions will be met with the same challenge.

The ECA also redoubled their opposition to FIFA's plans for a World Club Cup revamp from 2021.

Agnelli expressed his deep concern at the manner in which FIFA has acted over the matter and said the ECA will NOT support the new-look competition starting in two years' time.

He added: "We have repeatedly stressed that the International Match Calendar and competitions have been agreed and defined up to 2024.

"The main priority at this stage must be for stakeholders to engage in a detailed assessment of how the landscape of international football might evolve post-2024 prior to addressing specific competitions.

"FIFA’s decision to revamp its Club World Cup starting 2021 is one ECA cannot support."
