UEFA 'sets requirements' to move Man City vs Chelsea Champions League final

UEFA have made a number of requirements for the Champions League final to be moved to England, according to reports.

Premier League duo Manchester City and Chelsea are set to face off at the end of the month for European football's biggest prize but the countdown to the final has been overshadowed by the coronavirus situation in Turkey.

This week, the UK government placed Turkey upon the 'red list' of countries - meaning people 'should not travel for leisure purposes' and must book a hotel quarantine upon their return at their own expense.

That has led to calls for the all-English final to be moved to the UK shores and the Sun reports UEFA are ready to agree to a move, as long as some guarantees are met.

Europe's governing body are said to be sympathetic to the situation and agree that not asking fans to travel for the final makes sense but have ruled out a number of potential venues.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, Newcastle United's St. James' Park and Aston Villa's Villa Park are stated to be not under consideration, while UEFA is also not considering Glasgow's Hampden Park or the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Instead, Wembley, which has a capacity of 22,500 until mid-June, is the only suitable venue - which presents some hurdles to overcome.

The Champions League final is set for May 29th, the same day as the Championship playoff final at Wembley, which would need to be shifted or rescheduled - either taking the game to an alternative venue or being played 48 hours before the final between City and Chelsea.

On top of that, UEFA is also seeking assurances from the government that all media, broadcasters, sponsors and VIPs will be able to attend the showcase final without any quarantine issues.

UEFA is also reportedly set to ask the clubs involved in this season's Champions League to give up part of their prize money to meet the estimated £20m-plus costs already incurred by the Turkish authorities in preparation for the final in Istanbul, which was originally due to be played last year.

Either way, a final decision is said to be made early this week which will give the fans the answers they require for the historic match.

Conservative MP Michael Gove was asked about the Champions League final venue on Saturday by Sky News, where he said:

“There are delicate negotiations that are going on at the moment. My friend, my colleague the culture secretary Oliver Dowden (the minister for sport) is talking to people about this at the moment, and so I don't want to cut across that.

“But I'm sure that fans in the UK would dearly love to see the final played here in the UK.”
