UEFA set to make Liverpool red card decision that will anger Diego Simeone

Antoine Griezmann is set to have his one-match ban extended after he was sent off for a challenge on Liverpool's Roberto Firmino.

The incident occurred on October 19, when the Reds visited Atletico Madrid in the Champions League for a crucial encounter.

After a rapid start for Liverpool thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita, Griezmann got Atletico on level terms thanks to a 14-minute brace.

However, the match swung in the 52nd minute, when a high challenge from Griezmann caught Firmino in the head and neck, leaving the referee with no choice but to issue him with a red card.

Liverpool were able to take control of the game and seized a 3-2 win thanks to Salah's penalty. Atletico then saw a late goal contentiously ruled out after a VAR review, much to the dismay of Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

The France international striker was subsequently suspended for the return fixture at Anfield. In that encounter the Reds won 2-0 and secured their qualification for the knockout stages as group winners.

Griezmann was expected to be available for Atletico's next Champions League game on Wednesday, although according to Marca (h/t Football Espana ) UEFA have decided the challenge on Firmino warranted an extra game ban.

Atletico's qualification hopes still hang in the balance, as they trail second-place Porto by a point with two games to go.

Simeone's side are said to be ready to appeal the decision in the hope their key forward can feature against the Rossoneri, as well as their final group-stage clash with Porto.

The two matches between Liverpool and Atletico were fiery affairs, as Felipe controversially saw red in the Anfield clash too.
