Uefa set to investigate attack on black fans during Dynamo Kyiv v Chelsea

Warning: viewers may find this video distressing. Footage showing fans attacked during Dynamo Kyiv v Chelsea.

Uefa is set to investigate an attack on four black fans during Dynamo Kyiv’s 0-0 Champions League draw against Chelsea.

Footage of the incident obtained by the anti-discrimination network Fare, and passed to Uefa’s disciplinary body, appears to show a group of Dynamo fans attacking four black men after spotting them in a neighbouring section of seating. When the men, who were also supporting Dynamo, tried to escape, they appeared to be attacked by other fans in the stand.

Fare, which has raised the incident with local law enforcement agencies, said its observer also witnessed other home fans intervening to try to protect the victims. No police or stewards are visible on the footage, and the victims’ identity and condition is currently not known.

Uefa fined Dynamo €15,000 and ordered them to close part of their stadium in March after racist behaviour by fans towards Everton players during a Europa League game.

Piara Powar, executive director of Fare, told the Guardian: “This terrible incident reflects many of the continuing realities of football in central and Eastern Europe. A report has been made to Uefa, who have regulatory responsibility for the match, and we will be lobbying for the strongest sanctions.”

Uefa and Dynamo Kyiv have both been approached for comment.
