UEFA set for major Champions League final decision that could impact Chelsea amid Russia concern

UEFA is monitoring the escalation of tension between Russia and Ukraine with the potential of May's Champions League final being moved from Saint Petersburg should the former instigate an invasion in the coming days.

European football's governing body is comfortable with changing location at short notice, switching last season's final from Istanbul to Porto owing to coronavirus restrictions less than a month before.

That meant several thousand supporters were allowed to travel to witness Chelsea defeat Manchester City.

While no decision is imminent around this season's showpiece, scheduled to take place at Krestovsky Stadium on May 28, the game will be moved should the host country be engaged in a war with another of the association's members.

Last weekend, with more than 100,000 Russian troops gathering on its southwest border, the US and UK were among the governments instructing its citizens to leave Ukraine as urgently as possible.

The Ukraine national team is also increasingly likely to have to play its next home fixtures on neutral ground. Republic of Ireland are due to visit in mid-June, with the Ukrainian FA already planning to host that Nations League tie further west in Lviv rather than Kiev.

Chelsea, who won the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night, are one of four Premier League sides remaining in the Champions League.

Thomas Tuchel's team face Lille in the first leg of their round of 16 tie on Tuesday week with the competition resuming tomorrow as Paris Saint-Germain face Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon take on Manchester City.

Liverpool have been drawn with Internazionale, while Manchester United will face Atletico Madrid.
