Uefa say Henrikh Mkhitaryan decided to miss Europa League final despite 'comprehensive security plan'

The decision of Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan to miss next week’s Europa League Final in Baku over security concerns was "personal" to the player, Uefa insist.

The Armenian will not be part of Arsenal's travelling squad to Baku due to political tensions between Azerbaijan and Mkhitaryan’s native country over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Arsenal wanted sufficient assurances from Uefa over their player's safety before allowing him to travel and both player and club confirmed on Tuesday "deep concerns" over the situation and would not permit the travel.

However, Uefa later insisted that a "comprehensive security plan" was in place for Mkhitaryan.

It said in a statement: "Working alongside Arsenal FC, Uefa sought and received assurances regarding the player's safety in Azerbaijan from the highest authorities in the country.

"As a result of these guarantees, a comprehensive security plan was developed and given to the club.

"While the club acknowledges the efforts that UEFA and the Azeri government have gone to in this matter, we respect the personal decision not to travel with the player."
