UEFA’s plans for international football in 2020/21 amid European championships postponement

It has been announced that Euro 2020 has been postponed for a year amid the coronavirus outbreak which has had an impact on both international and domestic football.

Leagues around the world have put action on hold amid the pandemic causing confusion over possible solutions in order to conclude seasons.

The Premier League made the decision at the end of last week that fixtures will be postponed until at least April 4th, although there is a distinct possibility that the suspension could be extended.

The outbreak has also caused questions over the summer’s tournament with the decision to push back by a year being taken on Tuesday.

Euro 2020 postponed due to coronavirus pandemic

In the resolution signed by UEFA, the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFAPRO Europe an agreement was reached that the finals of the tournament will be moved from 12th June - 12th July 2020 to 11th June-11th July 2021.

The change means that European qualifiers due to take place in June 2021 will be rescheduled.

It also means that the UEFA Nations League finals, the UEFA U21 Euro finals and the Women’s Euros that were all scheduled for next summer will also be re-scheduled accordingly.

The play-off matches for the rescheduled tournament which were due to be held in March have also been postponed and will now take place in the summer, although they are subject to a review.
