UEFA's Man Utd Europa League decision leaves rivals furious

Real Sociedad director of football Roberto Olabe has hit out at UEFA after they confirmed the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie against Manchester United will take place in Turin.

The La Liga side were due to host the Red Devils at their Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian next Thursday.

However, strict travel regulations enforced by the Spanish government as a result of Covid-19 means United would have been unable to make the trip.

It comes after Liverpool, Manchester City's and Chelsea's upcoming away Champions League ties have also been moved, as well as Arsenal's Europa League one.

Instead, the first leg will now be played in the Juventus ' Allianz Stadium, but there has been no change to the second leg, which is still set to take place at Old Trafford on February 25.

Speaking to Diario Vasco, Olabe stated his belief that the fact United will a home advantage but La Real will not is unfair on his side.

“I would like the return to be also on a neutral ground or for UEFA to appoint a single venue for a one-game tie as it did last year,” Olabe said.

"It does not seem coherent to me that as the home team, we play in a neutral field and as a visitor, we do it there, but that’s the way things are."

Despite the perceived disadvantage, Olabe still appears confident La Real have a good chance of causing an upset and knocking out United.

He added: "I’m very excited, and yes, I think we can eliminate them. However, Manchester United have one of the most complete squads in the world, with an exceptional level of players."

La Real currently sit in sixth place in La Liga, and have a number of familiar names in their squad familiar to Premier League fans, such as former Manchester City star David Silva, ex-United winger Adnan Januzaj and former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal.
