Uefa releases almost £60m of Euro 2020 benefit payments early to help clubs

Uefa will release almost £60million in benefit payments to clubs who released players for European Qualifiers early to help ease the financial impact of coronavirus.

The Executive Committee of European football's governing body met via video conference on Thursday and, among other things, made the call to release the payments ahead of schedule.

The payments, which range from €3,200-€630,000 (£2,800-£550,470) per club, were set to be made following the completion of the Euro 2020 qualification play-offs.

Uefa now expect those games to take place in autumn, following which another €2.7m (£2.36m) will be distributed to clubs who supply players to the nations involved.

The remainder of the €200m (£174.8m) fund, which was agreed with the European Clubs Association (ECA) and covers the 2019 Nations League and qualification for Euro 2020 - which has now been postponed until 2021, will be paid out upon completion of the finals.

In all 676 clubs from across Uefa's 55 member associations will receive payments.

"European clubs are an integral part of the success of our national team competitions," said Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin. "As a result, a share of our national team competition revenues is distributed to the clubs which release players for those matches.

"In these difficult times when many clubs are facing financial issues, especially with their cash flow, it was our duty to make sure that clubs receive these payments as quickly as possible."

Juventus owner Andrea Agnelli, chairman of the ECA, said: “This represents a much-needed liquidity injection into club finances and is a result of ECA’s joint work with UEFA on safeguarding clubs at this time of existential threat.

"Whilst public health remains our primary concern, securing financial, legal and regulatory relief in advance of restarting football across Europe, once it is safe to do so, is of paramount importance to ECA and its members.”
