UEFA release statement on Argentina playing in Nations League following Lionel Messi outburst

UEFA have moved to deny reports they could invite Argentina into its competitions following their acrimonious exit from Copa America.

The Albiceleste crashed out in controversial fashion against Brazil, before beating Chile in the third-place playoff.

But even that game did not pass off without incident as Lionel Messi was sent off for his part in a clash with Gary Medel, who was also given his marching orders.

Messi launched an astonishing rant at CONMEBOL following the game, describing the officiating in the semi-final defeat as "bulls***" - and suggesting his side were the victims of "corruption" in favour of Brazil during the tournament.

CONMBEOL reacted by describing Messi's outburst as "unacceptable" and "unfounded" - triggering reports UEFA could invite Argentina to play in the Nations League.

But they have rubbished the claims, stating such an offer will not be forthcoming.

A statement read: "There is no truth whatsoever in the suggestion that Argentina has been asked to participate in UEFA competitions, nor to become a member of UEFA.

"UEFA has never entered into any discussions on this matter and would never do so.

"However, in the spirit of friendship and camaraderie and as an inclusive organisation, UEFA will, of course, invite Argentina as special guests to watch any UEFA competition at any time."
