UEFA refereeing chief wants no VAR changes after controversial Premier League debut

UEFA's chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti believes the use of VAR around offsides should not be changed.

The first weekend of VAR’s use in the Premier League saw a Manchester City goal disallowed by the technology as it showed he was marginally offside - and questions have been asked whether the laws were applied too strongly.

A debate has emerged as to whether should be used around marginal offside calls, with it being reported IFAB, football’s lawmakers, are studying the protocols of VAR and the offside rules.

However, UEFA’s chief refereeing officier Rosetti believes no changes should be made and that offside should be called if the images showed if an image made it clear - regardless of how marginal the call was.

"If you have a clear image that proves that the player, the attacker, is an offside position, using technology - of course, you have to intervene," he said ahead of the UEFA Super Cup clash between Liverpool and Chelsea.

"We are in contact with Mike Riley, we are working together, we are sharing opinions, so he knows very well my point.

"I don't want to speak about Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga and Premier League. I know that this is not an easy project and, of course, the referees, the VARs, need time to adapt but I'm sure it will work well."
