UEFA postpone vote on major Champions League changes that could affect Liverpool

UEFA have confirmed that a decision on a planned new Champions League format has been delayed.

Under the new format, the current group phase would be scrapped, with the so-called Swiss system seeing each club playing 10 group matches instead of six in one league table.

The number of qualifiers will also be expanded from 32 to 36, with space for two 'wild card' entries.

They will be reserved for clubs with the highest UEFA co-efficient who have not qualified for the competition through their league position.

Should this format be in place at the minute, then it would mean Liverpool would gain a Champions League spot despite currently being seventh in the Premier League table.

A meeting of UEFA’s club competitions committee had been expected to ratify the changes ahead of a rubber-stamp vote.

However, the crucial vote on the controversial reforms has now been postponed at the last minute, after UEFA claimed it needed more time to 'finalise' discussions.

As a result of today’s latest update, the governing body will no longer decide on a new format for Europe’s premier club competition at a meeting of their executive committee on Wednesday.

A UEFA statement read: “Following various media enquiries over the last few days, Uefa can confirm that a meeting of the executive committee will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 31 March, and that the future of club competitions post-2024 will be one of the topics discussed.

“However, any official decision in this respect will only be made at the next Uefa executive committee meeting on 19 April, in order to finalise ongoing discussions.”
