UEFA 'open to moving Champions League final to Wembley' - but lay out set of conditions

UEFA are reportedly open to moving the Champions League final to Wembley amid continuing calls for the showpiece to be taken away from Istanbul.

Chelsea are due to play Manchester City on May 29 and - with Turkey currently on the UK Government's red list amid a crippling second wave of coronavirus - UEFA are under pressure to act.

Boris Johnson has waded into the row urging European football chiefs to allow the game to be staged in the UK, with a number of club grounds available to stage the fixture.

UEFA are, according to The Sun, sympathetic to the fact that players, staff and fans from the two clubs would need to quarantine for 10 days on arrival back in the UK if they were to travel to Turkey for the match.

But they are not willing to stage the match at any other UK venue than Wembley, which is due to stage the Championship playoff final on the same day.

That could see the EFL move that fixture to a different venue, or bring it forward, with a limited number of fans expected to be allowed at both matches.

But UEFA also want guarantees from the UK Government that media, broadcasters, VIPs and sponsors would be able to attend without being subject to quarantine issues.

And clubs involved in this season's tournament are also expected to be asked to give up part of their prize money to meet the costs - estimated to be in the region of £20million - incurred by the Turkish authorities.
