UEFA Nations League: 16 players from Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea set for short turnaround

England's bid for a first trophy since 1966 is set to be affected by the incredible form of Premier League teams in Europe.

The Three Lions will compete in the UEFA Nations League finals this summer in Portugal after topping their group with Croatia and Spain.

Gareth Southgate's side will face the Netherlands in their semi-final, just five days after Liverpool take on Tottenham in the Champions League final.

The other semi-final sees Portugal play Switzerland, the day before England face the Netherlands.

Arsenal and Chelsea's progression to the Europa League final could also have an impact, although that fixture is eight days prior to the start of England's Nations League campaign.

Liverpool and Spurs collectively have 13 players who could be involved in the Nations League semi-finals, with 10 of those potentially in England's squad.

Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the Reds stars who will be hoping for a call-up.

Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose, Harry Winks, Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Dele Alli could be given the nod from Spurs.

Also at Liverpool are Dutch duo Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum, plus Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri, who would have only four days between the Champions League final and Switzerland vs Portugal.

The impact from Chelsea and Arsenal is smaller.

Just Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are potential call-ups for England from the Blues, while the Gunners have only Switzerland's Granit Xhaka that could play in the tournament.

England boss Southgate admitted the progression of Premier League sides has made England's task in Portugal more difficult.

"It is a little bit more complicated but firstly it is a brilliant achievement by the two clubs and by the two managers," he said.

"In different ways, they have had phenomenal seasons against really difficult challenges.

"For our young English players it is great that they are playing in matches that really matter while under pressure and they are being really successful because that will help England in the long run.

"Although it makes our preparation a bit more complicated, that is a challenge that we have to deal with as a group of staff. We have got to adapt.

"We are always telling our players to adapt so we have got to do the same. We can still prepare the team for the game with Holland.

"It is just making sure the players we are working with are as prepared as they can be. Then we will fit those other players back into the programme when they arrive back with us.

"We won't have long before our matches but actually we are used to that as with our international weeks we only get two or three days' preparation.

"Although you would like more for a semi-final, and we could have had more, we haven't and we have just got to deal with that."
