UEFA make decision over Super Cup host city as Chelsea set to face Villarreal

UEFA have made a decision on the UEFA Super Cup after Chelsea booked a place in the fixture.

The Blues gave themselves the chance to become Super Cup champions for only the second time after winning the Champions League last weekend, defeating Manchester City in Porto.

Chelsea reached the Super Cup after winning the Champions League in 2012, but they were stunned by a Radamel Falcao hat-trick, losing 4-1 to Atletico Madrid, and they were beaten on penalties by Bayern Munich a year later after they won the Europa League.

Their fortunes didn't get much better in 2019 after losing on penalties again following another Europa League crown, this time losing to Liverpool.

That means their only Super Cup victory to date remains 1998 when they beat Real Madrid 1-0 after a UEFA Cup victory earlier in the year.

And they will have to defeat Spanish opposition again to add to their sole super Cup victory, set to take on Europa League winners Villarreal in August.

Villarreal defeated Manchester United 11-10 on penalties in the Europa League final to win their first-ever major trophy, also knocking out Arsenal on their way to the final.

And as both sides cast an early eye on their next piece of silverware, UEFA have made a decision on where the Super Cup will be held.

The fixture was supposed to be held in Belfast, but after Istanbul lost the Champions League final for a second successive year due to coronavirus restrictions, there were reports they would be handed the Super Cup.

But after much deliberation, UEFA have now confirmed the fixture will still take place in Belfast, at Windsor Park, on August 11 with an 8pm kick-off.

The Northern Ireland FA statement confirmed: "The 2021 UEFA Super Cup final will be played at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park in Belfast on 11 August,” they said.

“After recent speculation that the game would be switched to Istanbul, UEFA has today confirmed that the showpiece fixture between Champions League winners, Chelsea, and Europa League winners, Villareal, will remain in Northern Ireland.”
