UEFA make Champions League plans that could affect Chelsea

UEFA are working towards fans being able to attend this season's Champions League final in Istanbul.

ESPN report that the governing body are hopeful that fans will be welcomed back into the ground for the match, and football.london understands that while the stadium will not be full, UEFA are hoping that up to 50% of the seats at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium will be used.

There has been plenty of disruption this season in the Champions League and Europa League, with local COVID protocols ensuring some matches taking place in neutral venues.

However, with optimism beginning to grow over mass events in the next few months as vaccination programmes roll out over Europe, UEFA are hoping that they will be able to welcome a sizeable number of spectators to their showpiece event of the domestic footballing calendar.

Chelsea are one of the English teams the decision could affect, with Thomas Tuchel's side hoping to seal progression to the quarter-finals after winning the away leg of their tie against Atletico Madrid.

Should they be able to reach the final, it could mean that some Blues fans are allowed to attend the event - giving the club an opportunity to reward some lucky supporters.

The 2020/21 season has been like no other in the era of professional football, with most of Europe seeing the majority of their games played behind closed doors.

UEFA are also still progressing with their plans to have the rescheduled Euro 2020 matches played in cities across Europe.

No contingency plans had been made to host the tournament in a single nation by the end of January, and despite Boris Johnson making an offer to host the tournament in England, UEFA are still pushing forward with their plans for multi-nation hosting.

"We have several scenarios, but the one guarantee we can make is that the option of playing any Euro 2020 match in an empty stadium is off the table. Every host must guarantee there will be fans at their games," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said.
