UEFA launch Super League investigation after Man City and Manchester United withdrawal

UEFA have launched a disciplinary investigation into the three remaining clubs who have signed up for the European Super League, the governing body has announced.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are the only three sides from the original breakaway proposals yet to formally withdraw and UEFA has warned they will take 'whatever action it deems appropriate'.

Manchester United and Manchester City, along with Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, were the six Premier League sides to sign up for the proposals.

However, they all received significant backlash and withdrew with their tail tucked between their legs, with similar situations on the continent occurring for AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.

While the withdrawal of 75 per cent of the founding clubs left the plans in tatters, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are yet to formally withdraw - and UEFA is now set to take action.

"In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors have today been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework by Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project.

"Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course."

The news does not come as a surprise, with UEFA issuing a statement last Friday confirming a peace accord with the nine clubs that withdrew was in place and ended that comment with a warning.

"UEFA has reserved all rights to take whatever action it deems appropriate against those clubs that have so far refused to announce the so-called Super League.

"The matter will promptly be referred to the competent UEFA disciplinary bodies."
