UEFA issues statement on away fans attending European games

UEFA have confirmed there will be no away fans in attendance for the qualifying rounds of European club competitions this summer.

Linfield are set to kick-off their Champions League campaign next month against Lithuanian side Zalgiris Vilnius, while Coleraine, Glentoran and Larne will feature in the Europa Conference League.

The Bannsiders take on FK Velez from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first qualifying round, with Glentoran (TNS) and Larne (Bala Town) meeting Welsh opposition.

UEFA notified clubs this week as the early qualifying round draws were getting underway.

It comes as travel restrictions remain in place for many countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Larne shared UEFA's statement which read: We remind you that in case UEFA matches are staged with spectators all clubs must respect the UEFA Minimum Health & Hygiene Requirements for the Return of Spectators v2.

“The decision on the number of permitted spectators falls under the responsibility of the relevant competent local/national authorities.

"Please note that in view of the ongoing travel restrictions and in order to minimise COVID-19 related risks, the UEFA Executive Committee decided as well to not allow visiting fans to attend UEFA club competition matches and not to apply the 5% rule for visiting supporters for all 2021/22 qualifying phase and play-offs matches.

"No spectators are allowed for matches played in neutral venues.”

Larne - who are scheduled to play Bala at the TNS at Park Hall, Oswestry on Thursday, July 8 - said on their website: "We understand this will come as a disappointment to many fans who had hoped to travel, especially with the game taking place in the UK.

"However, all clubs were informed of UEFA’s directive after the draw was made earlier today.

"We will confirm ticketing arrangements for the second leg at Inver Park, in due course."

Linfield, Coleraine and Glentoran also urged their fans not to make any travel arrangements.
