UEFA hint at SFA financial hammer blow as medical expert insists fan return plans don't apply

The SFA face a financial hammer blow as UEFA chief medical officers hinted Scotland's autumn internationals will all be played in empty stadiums.

Nations League encounters with Israel and the Czech Republic await Steve Clarke 's side as they prepare for a return to action in September.

The crucial Euro 2020 play-off with the Israelis is to follow in October before more Nations League games against Slovakia and Czech Republic, all at Hampden.

It's hoped fans will be allowed into stadiums - to some degree at least - shortly, with plenty of nations in Europe already allowing fans in.

But Professor Tim Meyer, UEFA's medical committee chairman, has warned it's a completely different process when countries face each other on the international stage.

He said: "UEFA has different needs to serve than the national leagues. For a final tournament that takes place in one country - like the Champions League in Portugal and the Europa League in Germany - this can be organised relatively well.

"But when all 55 UEFA nations start playing international matches and the Nations League in autumn, there will be other levels of difficulty, such as national legislation or laboratory availability.

"That will be far more complex at UEFA level. In my view, the two tournaments in August are easier to master.

"UEFA has not yet made any final decision on the tournaments in August, but it looks like it will be behind closed doors at the moment. I also think it's right that you wait as long as you can for organisational reasons to be able to react to the pandemic.

"The countries where supporters are allowed back into stadiums are for league games. UEFA competitions are based on UEFA regulations.

"Also in those countries mentioned where supporters have returned, no one can have a full stadium against the requirements of UEFA if it is a UEFA competition and the rules do not allow spectators."
