UEFA give post-Rangers title celebrations verdict for Euro 2020 after claim it could hurt Hampden bid

UEFA have reiterated their plans to stage Euro 2020 at Hampden despite Rangers fans' title celebrations in Glasgow on Sunday.

Thousands of supporters turned up at Ibrox and George Square after Steven Gerrard's side sealed the Premiership crown following Celtic's stalemate with Dundee United despite the strict 'stay at home' message during lockdown.

Secretary Humza Yousaf claimed the events could jeopardise Scotland's chances of hosting Euro 2020 matches at Hampden.

But the European governing body insist they still plan to stage the national tournament in the original 12 cities.

They referred to president Aleksander Ceferin's statement, saying: "UEFA is committed to holding EURO 2020 in the 12 cities originally planned.

“The EURO is the flagship competition for national team football in Europe and is a vital source of funding for grassroots and wider football development.

“I am optimistic that things are highly likely to be very different with regard to the virus as we move closer to the tournament and it is important that we give the host cities and governments as much time as we can to formulate an accurate picture of what will be possible come June and July.

“Fans are such a big part of what makes football special and that is true of the EURO as much as it is of any game. We must allow ourselves the maximum space to allow their return to the stadiums.”

Humza said at the weekend: “UEFA are watching. They want a safe tournament and this could really put that tournament coming to Scotland into jeopardy and we just do not want that.”

Hampden is in line to host three group stage games, as well as a knockout match in the last 16 at the tournament.

But UEFA want assurances fans will be allowed to attend those games and have given the Scottish government a deadline of April 7 to confirm if that can be granted.
