UEFA drop Super League disciplinary action as decision on Liverpool fine made

UEFA has revealed it has dropped all disciplinary charges against the three remaining European Super League teams and also outlined its plans for Liverpool and the other founding members.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus have refused to withdraw from the European Super League but UEFA announced on Monday night that its independent case against the trio has been “declared null and void, without any prejudice, as if the proceedings had never been opened.”

UEFA’s decision not to pursue the matter any further also extends to the fines handed out to Liverpool and the other eight founding members in May.

The Reds were among Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Inter Milan, who all quickly withdrew following intense backlash regarding the proposed league.

Their initial punishment was said to be a combined fine of €15m and to have 5% of their revenues from UEFA competitions withheld for one season.

However, the European football governing body has said it has informed the clubs that it will not ask for these fines to be paid “to avoid any unnecessary complication”, while a legal case involving UEFA and the Super League’s three current members remains ongoing.

UEFA’s statement is the result of the governing body seeking to comply with Spanish law, after a court order was issued by a Madrid Commercial Court, following the three clubs being allowed to re-enter UEFA competitions.

Despite the news, UEFA says it will continue to fight against any similar league forming in the future: “UEFA will continue to take all necessary steps, in strict accordance with national and EU law, in order to defend the interests of UEFA and of all football stakeholders.”
