UEFA drafts controversial plan with wholesale rule changes to Champions League

The Champions League could be in for a major makeover - if UEFA's latest proposed plans go ahead.

A range of new changes to the format and rules of Europe's top cup competition could be implemented under recent drafts laid out by the governing body.

It would see the number of teams increase, as well as a league format introduced which would include promotion and relegation.

Head of the European Leagues, Lars-Christer Olsson said: "There are ideas about promotion and relegation in the system, it's a different system from the one we have today.

"The total picture is there should be more clubs involved, for example ... so we have to analyse what effect that is going to have."

The idealogy behind the blueprints are not too dissimilar from suggestions made previously by Juventus president Andrea Agnelli.

His proposal would involve UEFA scrapping both the Europa and Champions League in favour of a Europe-wide league where teams could move up or go down.

As well as his role at the Serie A club, Agnelli also chairs the European Club Association, which boasts a number of elite clubs as members.

Olsson's group meanwhile represents Europe's domestic leagues, and conceded there was "not a big difference" between the plans and Agnelli's proposal.

Nothing concrete has yet been determined, with UEFA insisting they are only currently at a "brainstorming" stage of discussions.

President Aleksander Ceferin said: "At the moment we have only ideas and opinions."

"We will use this process to design our competitions to protect and develop European football.

"Our aim is to find a solution that reflects the changes in the game, preserves the position of UEFA's competitions as the most attractive and exciting in the world, while providing significant solidarity funding across European football."

The plans raised fears that the new format could see club's remain in European competition in spite of whether they qualify via the domestic means available.

However Olsson declared that this is a tradition that must be maintained, as the plans came up against opposition from league executives.

President of the Spanish La Liga, Javier Tebas, said: "We hope we can change everything that has been presented."
