UEFA development offers Leeds United’s promotion bid ideal shot in the arm

Breath remains baited for all connected to Leeds United and how their fate is determined with the Premier League within touching distance after 16 years.

Thankfully, Associated Press have brought some clarity to the discussion with a report on confidential UEFA documents, which are offering the firmest dates yet on football’s resumption.

After the non-event of Wednesday’s EFL update, European football’s leaders have written to their stakeholders and brought the surest sign yet United will be allowed their promotion tilt.

The key points were confidence football can restart, abandonment would be premature, resumption in July and August with plans made public by mid-May.

The chiefs also underlined the ‘paramount importance’ of competitions being ‘decided on the field’. If UEFA are saying this, England’s authorities should fall into line.

There is too much doubt and legal conjecture around the possibilities of following the precedents set by Rugby Football Union and Royal Belgian FA yesterday.

While their models would see the Whites promoted based on the season’s opening 37 rounds, that route is fraught with disagreement and legal loopholes.

Play it out on the pitch in any time required and get this club promoted with no asterisk next to their slot on Wikipedia.

News, of some description, is expected from England’s authorities later on Friday. Let us hope it follows UEFA’s lead.
