UEFA could cost Chelsea £9.1m as Champions League redraw is confirmed after Man Utd controversy

The mistake by UEFA during this morning's Champions League Round of 16 draw could have big financial implications for the clubs involved.

During the draw in Nyon, Manchester United were pitted against Spanish club Villarreal. However, as they two played each other during the group stage, they were prohibited from meeting in the first knockout round. Villarreal were then drawn against Manchester City.

The next tie resulted in Bayern Munich playing Atletico Madrid. However, Manchester United did not appear to be put into the mix of potential opponents with Liverpool, who were in the same group as Atletico, added instead.

United were later drawn against Ligue 1 giants Paris St Germain in the last fixture to be drawn. Moments earlier, Chelsea were handed a tie against another French side, Lille.

However, UEFA have confirmed the draw to be void and a redraw will take place at 2pm UK time.

"Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

"As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 15:00 CET."

The mistake could have sizeable financial implications for clubs. Chelsea, for example, maybe handed a significantly tougher Round of 16 tie with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Ajax their other potential opponents in addition to Lille.

Clubs that progress into the quarter-finals of the Champions League are handed £9.1million in prize money from UEFA.

A further £10.8m is then awarded to semi-finalists and £13.4m given to the two sides who reach the showpiece final, which will this year be played in Saint Petersburg.

The club that comes away victorious from the final then receives £3.8m in prize money. An additional £3m is then handed over by UEFA to the Champions League winner for their involvement in the Super Cup against the club that clinched the Europa League.
