Uefa considering plan to 'play Champions League Final on August 29'

Uefa are weighing up the possibility of playing the 2019-20 Champions League Final on August 29, according to the latest reports.

Along with almost all domestic football across the continent, both the Champions League and Europa League competitions were suspended last month during their respective last-16 phases as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

While Premier League clubs are due to examine their situation again on Friday, Uefa have confirmed plans for the governing body's executive committee to meet via video conference next Thursday (April 23), where they will discuss the latest developments relating to the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on European football.

The general secretaries of Uefa’s 55 member associations are also scheduled to meet in similar fashion on Tuesday.

The fate of this season's European competitions is sure to be high on the agenda, with outlets including the BBC reporting on Thursday that Uefa are considering the option of the Champions League Final - originally scheduled to be held on May 30 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul - being held at the same venue three months later than planned on August 29.

Under those proposals, the Europa League Final - initially due to be held on May 27 - would take place three days earlier in Gdansk, Poland on August 26.

Much seems likely to depend on the resumption of domestic seasons, with the first of two scenarios said to be being considered by Uefa involving playing quarter-finals and semi-finals across two legs as usual alongside domestic fixtures, providing leagues are able to start up again at some point over the next couple of months.

However, further delays to domestic campaigns could see the remaining European fixtures become one-off matches that are condensed into a short window, leading to the possibility of one-week mini-tournaments being contested in late August.
