UEFA consider plan to condense or SCRAP Champions League and Europa League qualifiers

UEFA is considering a plan to condense the qualifying stages of the Champions League and Europa League or even GET RID of them altogether.

If, as expected, the league is called soon Celtic would be heading for the Champions League with Rangers, Aberdeen and Motherwell set for the Europa League.

The Dons would qualify as fourth best team in the league due to the absence of a Scottish Cup qualifier.

The governing body of European football has serious issues to address in coordinating the return of football in a continent that has been affected in different ways by the coronavirus.

They have already moved the start of the prestigious tournaments back to late October but concerns over fitting in qualifying are growing.

UEFA want leagues to instruct them of plans to finish their tournaments by May 25 and aim to finish their own in August during a 'festival of football' that will see games take place at neutral venues over 90 minutes.

This leaves only a small window to fit in four qualifying rounds for both competitions.

According to The Times, plans reportedly under consideration include playing qualification rounds in one leg instead of two.

Only six of the 32 clubs in the Champions League come from qualifying making the situation simpler than the Europa League where 31 sides come from that route.

UEFA are expected to make their decision at an executive committee video conference on May 27.
