UEFA have released a statement strongly opposing any plans for a European Super League after reports that the Premier League 'big six' were planning a breakaway.
On Tuesday, Sky News reported the FIFA-backed tournament would involve Europe's biggest football clubs and "reshape the sport's global landscape".
Up to five English clubs could be involved, with Liverpool as well as Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur named as potential candidates.
The Reds have declined to comment since the story surfaced, with the club having regularly seen their name linked to similar proposed “breakaways” in the past.
A provisional start date of 2022 has reportedly been discussed, with Sky News says that financiers are putting together a $6bn (£4.6bn) package to fund the creation of the new league.
The report suggests that FIFA have been involved in developing the new format with the top-placed teams playing in a knockout competition to conclude the tournament.
It states that a source claims a formal announcement is possible as early as the end of this month, although a number of key details had yet to be finalised and the plans could still fall apart.
Following those reports, UEFA have now released an official statement confirming their stance against any proposed new competition.
A statement on Tuesday night read: “The UEFA President has made it clear on many occasions that UEFA strongly opposes a Super League. The principles of solidarity, of promotion, relegation and open leagues are non-negotiable.
“It is what makes European football work and the Champions League the best sports competition in the world.
"UEFA and the clubs are committed to build on such strength not to destroy it to create a super league of 10, 12, even 24 clubs, which would inevitably become boring.”
