UEFA confirm Champions League rule change to affect Liverpool and Man Utd for first time

UEFA have confirmed managers will be able to make up to five substitutions in Champions League and Europa League matches this season.

The rule change means Liverpool and Manchester United will be able to make more than the regular three substitutions in Europe's elite club competition for the first time.

Manchester City and Chelsea previously benefited from the increased number of substitutions in last's seasons Champions League knock-out stages.

United also benefited from the rule change on their path to the Europa League semi-finals, but they have never made more than three substitutions in the regular 90 minutes of a Champions League match.

UEFA have ratified the rule change for numerous competitions under their jurisdiction for the 2020/21 campaign.

A statement from the governing body reads: "The UEFA Executive Committee also decided to allow up to five substitutions for all matches played in the UEFA Nations League, the European Qualifiers play-offs, the UEFA Women’s EURO Qualifiers, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League as from the group stage, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League, for the remainder of the season, in order to alleviate the burden on players caused by the condensed 2020/21 international match calendar amid the Covid-19 pandemic."

UEFA also confirmed the increased number of substitutions means 12 players can be named on the bench instead of the usual seven.

The rule change will also impact Arsenal and Leicester, who have qualified for the Europa League group stage, and Tottenham, who are currently in the qualifying stages.

Spurs travel to North Macedonian side Shkendija in the third qualifying round on Thursday evening

Should they progress, Tottenham will face the winner of Rostov and Maccabi Haifa's tie in the play-off round on 1 October, before the Europa League group-stage draw the following day.

Also on 1 October is the Champions League group-stage draw, when Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea will find out which three teams they are each drawn with.
