UEFA chief says some host countries could be cut from Euro 2020 due to Covid-19

UEFA President Alexander Ceferin hasn't ruled out a Euro 2020 tournament going ahead next summer in fewer than the 12 planned host countries.

The European football showpiece - rescheduled for next summer - was planned to be played in twelve countries across the continent, including Dublin's Aviva Stadium.

But with the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc on international football in recent months, Ceferin is confident that the tournament will be played.

However, it remains to be confirmed if the tournament can be played in all of the host countries - with UEFA open to playing out games in just one country if required.

"We are always concerned about the situation (but) we are absolutely sure that the Euro will be played," Ceferin said.

"The plan is that we do the Euro exactly as it is.

"But I have to say that, instead of 12 countries, we could do a Euro instead in 11, in eight, in five or in one country."

The Aviva Stadium is currently set to host three group stage games, as well as a last 16 clash next summer.

Had Ireland qualified for the tournament, they would have hosted Poland and Sweden in their opening Group E games before Poland and Sweden clash in the final game.
