UEFA chief points to World War 2 example as he insists football will return to normal 'soon'

Aleksander Ceferin is adamant football will overcome the coronavirus crisis - because it survived two World Wars.

Much of the football world is in lockdown with no guarantees over when SPFL clubs will be allowed to return to action.

UEFA have faced fierce criticism over their stance of insisting seasons must be completed if possible, although they have softened their initial threats to withhold Champions League and Europa League places.

And governing body chief Ceferin, in an interview in Serbia, is convinced the virus won't defeat football because the sport has survived worse.

He said: "Football will only change for a short time. It has survived two world wars and epidemics.

"We will have our good, old football soon.

"Humanity will defeat Covid-19. We can now see that the world is very sensitive and the situation has been completely destabilising.

"But football gives out positive energy to people. Until football comes back, people will not be able to have the perception that the situation is normal.

"We would all like to see football return as soon as possible, but it depends first and foremost on the decisions of the authorities of countries.

"Footballers are workers like everyone else and, with all the medical measures and without any spectators, they can start the games relatively quickly again.

"But it does not depend solely on the will and desire of the athletes to return to the sport they love as soon as possible because now this is not about sport, but politics."
