Uefa chief Aleksander Ceferin has called on the Football Association to axe the League Cup to ease fixture congestion moving forward in a move which could impact Arsenal , Chelsea and Tottenham.
The governing body is eager to see the English schedule reduce to accommodate more games elsewhere in the calendar.
EFL chiefs are eager to keep the only second domestic Cup competition but efforts to expand the Champions League could put an end to those aims sooner rather than later.
Now Ceferin, one of the most important figures in European football, has insisted that the EFL Cup, named the Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons, should be killed off.
"The League Cup is off in France already," Ceferin told The Times. "Only England remains.
"I think that everybody knows that it would be better for everyone if that wasn't played any more.
"But the problem is that, through that cup, you finance a lot of clubs that are quite disadvantaged, so I understand the problem.
"The English are also quite traditionalist, you like things that have been there for ages."
Ceferin also talked about how he is ready to follow Premier League chiefs by introducing 'thicker' lines to stop the furore surrounding VAR offside decisions.
"Thicker lines are essential for me, because when you lose a match worth 100million euros because of 1cm, because your foot is long or your nose is long, it’s a bit too much," he added.
"The line that is drawn is a subjective thing because he or she draws it in a van or wherever they are. It has to be a clear and obvious mistake. There’s no way back now with VAR but let’s see how we improve it."
