Champions League football returned tonight with two places in the quarter-finals up for grabs. Real Madrid easily overcame Atalanta at home to progress, while Manchester City saw off Borussia Monchengladbach.
Karim Benzema scored a sixth goal in five games to put the 13-times European champions Real in charge after 34 minutes while captain Sergio Ramos converted a penalty on the hour mark.
The Italian side got one goal back thanks to a Luis Muriel free kick, but any hope of completing a comeback was dashed a minute later by a low strike from Marco Asensio as Real won 3-1 on the night, and 4-1 on aggregate,
Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan struck early as Man City eased into the quarters at the expense of Gladbach. The pair netted in the opening 18 minutes in Budapest, securing a 2-0 victory and wrapping up a comfortable 4-0 aggregate success for Pep Guardiola’s quadruple-chasing side.
Wednesday night offers two more last-16 ties: holders Bayern Munich are on the verge of going through given they hold a 4-1 lead over Lazio, while Chelsea welcome Atletico Madrid to Stamford Bridge with the Blues 1-0 up following a first-leg away win.
