UEFA cancel Youth League as Rangers kids see German clash scrapped amid pandemic safety concerns

UEFA have cancelled this season's Youth League as Rangers kids see their clash against Cologne scrapped.

The tournament was due to start in September but was pushed back as the coronavirus raged across Europe.

After a revised October deadline was missed, UEFA opted to restructure the tournament as a straight knockout competition.

Rangers were due to face Cologne in the last 32 on March 3, with the final in Nyon in May.

However, due to the ongoing Covid situation the youth version of the Champions League has been scrapped.

A statement announced: "The UEFA Executive Committee has decided to cancel the 2020/21 edition of the UEFA Youth League due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on the staging of competitions.

"The committee had initially decided last year to amend the format of the competition and to delay its start, but the various measures imposed by health authorities around Europe have continued to evolve since then.

"The travelling restrictions affecting participating clubs create major difficulties for organising their matches and two clubs have already withdrawn from the competition."
