UEFA break silence on football's return as Aleksander Ceferin shares delight over key update

Delighted UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has hailed German football as an example for others to follow after they announced the return of the Bundesliga.

Fixtures will recommence on May 16 as the beautiful game exits cold storage after two months on the shelf.

The European governing body have pushed for their individual league members to give themselves time before making a final decision on their respective leagues.

But with news that the Bundesliga will make a triumphant return next weekend - Ceferin believes it is the first sign that the sport can adapt amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

And it strengthens UEFA's own position as they continue to push for the completion of the 2019/20 Champions League and Europa League campaigns.

He said: “It is great news that the German authorities have agreed that the Bundesliga can return.

“This is a huge and positive step to bringing optimism back to people’s lives.

"It is the result of constructive dialogue and careful planning between the football authorities and politicians and I am confident that Germany will provide a shining example to all of us in how to bring football - with all its excitement, emotion and unpredictability- back into our lives.

“I wish everyone connected with this every success.”

The SPFL have until May 25 to make a final call on the Scottish Premiership after ending the Championship, League One and League Two.
