UEFA away goal rule to be scrapped from next season

UEFA have announced the away goal rule will be removed from European club football from next season.

This means the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League and Women's Champions League will no longer use the rule.

All ties that are level on aggregate at the end of the second leg will now go straight to extra time and penalties.

UEFA detailed how the gap is now smaller between the number of home and away wins as well as home and away goals scored in European competitions compared to when the rule was introduced, reducing home advantage.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said the away goal rule now "dissuades home teams - especially in first legs - from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage".

Ceferin added: “The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of Uefa competitions since it was introduced in 1965. However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various Uefa meetings over the last few years.

"Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.”

"It is fair to say that home advantage is now no longer as significant as it once was," he added.
