UEFA and FIFA given solidarity warning as Bayern Munich chief paints dire financial picture

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge warns "we have to get back to playing" as he calls on FIFA and UEFA to bail out struggling clubs.

European football has been shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic and it's not clear when it will be able to resume.

The SPFL will vote on proposals to end the lower leagues immediately and distribute prize money, while power could also be passed to do the same in the Premiership.

That could set Scottish football on a collision course with UEFA though, with the governing body insisting play should resume.

And an influential Bayern director has warned that FIFA and UEFA may have to come to the aid of financially hit clubs.

Rummenigge told Corriere dello Sport: "We have to get back to playing to limit sporting and financial damage.

"This crisis is global and frightening and the solution has to be a shared one. FIFA and UEFA must improve their relationship and intervene financially to help the leagues through a solidarity fund, then they will have to change international regulations on the transfer market.

"At Bayern all of us directors, managers, coaches and players have chosen to cut their April wages by 20 per cent to ensure that the employees, all the staff working in the club, were not affected.

"We are doing well but many clubs, even among the biggest, are in great difficulty.

"Too many clubs have accumulated debt with banks. We have a philosophy that we have never denied: on the transfer market we have always paid in cash without accessing loans."
