UEFA admit uncertainty over Euro 2020 due to coronavirus fears

UEFA have admitted they are in a state of limbo over Euro 2020 due to the growing fears surrounding coronavirus.

Italy - the most-affected European country - is due to stage the opening match of the tournament with Turkey scheduled to take on the Italians in Rome.

But the virus is spreading across the continent and - with the tournament set to be hosted across several countries - there are heightened fears as to whether it will go ahead.

UEFA executive committee member Michelle Uva said: "We are at the waiting stage. We are monitoring country by country, and football must follow the orders of the individual countries.

"The sporting path will only be closed if the situation gets worse."

Euro 2020 matches are due to be staged in Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and St Petersburg.

Italian football has already been affected by coronavirus, with Inter Milan playing the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie against Ludogorets on Thursday night behind closed doors.

Their showdown in Turin against Juventus - which could have huge implications on the destination of the Serie A title - will also be played in an empty stadium.

Bookmaker Ladbrokes are offering odds of 6/1 for Euro 2020 to be cancelled in light of the epidemic.

Ireland's Six Nations clash against Italy scheduled for this weekend has been postponed over health fears.
