UEFA admit England have struck it lucky as Aleksander Ceferin insists 'unfair' Euro format will not be repeated

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has claimed he would not back another pan-continental tournament in the wake of England 's run to the Euro 2020 final.

The tournament has been held in 11 host cities in total with fans being forced to fly thousands of miles to watch their country.

The format was rubber-stamped by Michel Platini despite critics pointing to the high costs for fans as well as environmental impact.

While UEFA claimed that the lack of new stadium builds and infrastructure work required would help to offset the tournament’s intensive travel demands, in reality some teams forced to fly over 10,000 kilometres over the last few weeks during the gruelling tournament.

Alongside this, there has been criticism of the on the park impact on the tournament with Gareth Southgate's men playing all but one of their games at Wembley on their way to the final.

Going into the massive Euro 2020 showdown with Italy on Sunday it hands Roberto Mancini's impressive side an uphill battle before a ball is even kicked.

Ceferin has conceded that he would no longer support a continent-wide tournament, telling BBC Sport : “I would not support it anymore.

“In a way, it is not correct that some teams have to travel more than 10,000km while others have to only travel 1000km.

“It is not fair to fans, who had to be in Rome one day and in Baku over the next few, which is a four and a half hour flight.

“We had to travel a lot, into countries with different jurisdictions, different currencies, countries in the European Union and Non-EU, so it was not easy.

“It was a format that was decided before I came [into post] and I respect it.

"It is an interesting idea but it is hard to implement and I don’t think we will do it again.”
