Uddingston businesswoman scoops top industry award for her volunteer work

An Uddingston businesswoman has won a major award for her community work.

Jan Livingstone, the customer service director at well-known local company SEAT outlet W Livingstone Ltd, had her efforts recognised by the Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA).

She received a coveted C.A.R. (Community Activity Recognition) Star Award at a glittering dinner held in Glasgow because of her tireless work with local charity, the G71 Bothwell and Uddingston Community Action Group.

Jan, whose showroom is on Old Edinburgh Road in the town, volunteered to help when the organisation was set up by local resident Allan Stewart at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020.

The aim of the group was to support those most in need within the community and the team were soon delivering more than 200 evening dinners and lunches.

Jan had the task of finding and co-ordinating volunteer drivers (including several members of W Livingstone Ltd’s staff) to deliver the meals.

While still managing her responsibilities within the business, Jan spent all of her spare time working for the action group, also organising “essential packs” to needy households who were able to make their own meals.

With Jan’s help, the charity has also set up a clothes bank and even carried out Easter, Halloween and Christmas convoys, where she and other volunteers have driven around the wider community giving gifts to families.

The organisation has even bought and installed several publicly accessible defibrillators in the community.

Speaking of her award Jan said: "It is a great honour to help our community in times of need and I enjoy the camaraderie of it all.

"It is a team effort and we have a wealth of volunteers who have made it possible to do this. I am only one of many who give up their free time to help."
