Udder chaos: escaped wandering cattle bring traffic to a halt on the M1

Motorists on the M1 were told to moo-ve over on Thursday afternoon after an adventurous cow and bull brought traffic to a standstill near Cooranbong.

The unlikely roadblock unfolded about 1.30pm on August 6, when police were called to reports the bovine pair had wandered onto the highway and were happily grazing in the median strip.

Rather than chewing the grass in their paddock, the duo decided the grass was greener between the northbound and southbound lanes, forcing police to temporarily close the middle lanes in both directions as officers worked to contain the situation and locate the animals' owner.

Officers worked with the owner to round up the escapees before herding them off the road and into a nearby paddock without incident.

Once the animals were safely secured and the road cleared, motorists could finally steer back onto their journey.

The local council has been notified of the incident.
