UConn coach Geno Auriemma to miss second game in a row with illness

HARTFORD, Conn. — UConn women’s basketball will be without head coach Geno Auriemma against Seton Hall, the program announced Tuesday.

This will be the No. 9 Huskies’ second game in a row without Auriemma, the first time that has happened in the regular season since 2018-19. This is also just the second time in program history that he has missed back-to-back regular-season games. Associate head coach Chris Dailey will take over head coaches duties, as she did in last Sunday’s 85-77 win over Florida State. She has led UConn to a 14-0 record in Auriemma’s absences throughout their time in Storrs together.

Auriemma was unwell with flu-like symptoms after shootaround last Sunday and decided not to coach UConn (8-2) in that game against the Seminoles. His mother also recently passed away on Dec. 8.

“There’s been a lot going on in the last couple weeks, and I think it caught up to my physically,” Auriemma said. “I’ve been feeling under the weather for about 10 days now, and my doctor recommended I take a few days off to fully recover. CD and the coaching staff will continue to do a phenomenal job in my absence, and I look forward to returning to the team in a few days.”

On the advice of medical staff, Auriemma is taking some time away from the team while he recovers.

Wednesday’s game will tip-off at noon on SNY.
