Why San Diego State Will Win
Is anyone on UCLA healthy?
RB Joshua Kelley’s knee wasn’t right for the loss to Cincinnati, WR Theo Howard was out, and the overall offense wasn’t there in the ugly 24-14 loss to Cincinnati.
This San Diego State defense isn’t one to try to get healthy against.
The Aztecs might have their share of issues, but the defense was amazing in the opener against a Weber State team that’s a whole lot more dangerous than it might seem – that’s a strong FCSer.
The Wildcats got nothing out of their running game, they ended up with just five first downs, and they couldn’t do anything against the swarming Aztec defense. There weren’t many plays in the backfield, and the D still was able to pitch a gem.
This UCLA offense isn’t going to go off, and it should be close throughout, but …
Why UCLA Will Win
San Diego State doesn’t have an offense, either. QB Ryan Agnew didn’t do anything down the field, even a little bit. The Aztecs averaged fewer than 3.6 yards per pass.
Star RB Juwan Washington was bottled up for just 55 yards, and now he’s hurt with an ankle injury.
Lost in the ugliness of the Cincinnati loss was a solid day from the UCLA defense against the run, with LB Krys Barnes leading a whole lot of big stops to keep the team in the game.
The Bruins have to get up early and make San Diego State scramble. Even a 10-0 lead might be enough to put this game away – there’s absolutely nothing on this Aztec offense to worry about.

What’s Going To Happen
It’s not going to be the UCLA the fans want with Chip Kelly running the O, but it’ll do just enough to pull get by.
San Diego State will throw a bit more, the defense will keep this close throughout, and it’ll be really, really ugly for both sides. But UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson will be better than 8-of-26, there will be better tempo, and there will be a few touchdowns – that will be enough.
