Uche Ikpeazu handed shock international call-up as Hearts striker in line for AFCON action

Hearts striker Uche Ikpeazu has been handed a shock international call-up by Uganda for their upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ikpeazu has been name din the Cranes’ squad for their qualifying double header against South Sudan at the end of this month.

The 25-year was born in Harrow but is eligible for the African nation via his Ugandan mother.

The big front man hasn’t been quoted for the Jambos recently, not even being named in the squad for their Scottish Cup quarter-final win over Rangers nor Tuesday’s Edinburgh derby win over Hibs at Easter Road.

He has been used sparingly since Daniel Stendel replaced Craig Levein as Tynecastle boss back in December, and has two goals and six assist from 29 appearances in maroon this season.

However, that hasn’t stopped Uganda boss John McKinstry from including Ikpeazu in his pool for their 2021 AFCON qualifying clashes.

McKinstry’s men sit top of Group B, level on points with Burkina Faso and one point ahead of Malawi in third.

Motherwell defender Bevis Mugabi is the other SPFL representative in the squad, as Ikpeazu becomes the first Hearts player since David Obua to be called up by Uganda.

The former Cambridge United striker also qualifies to play for Nigeria via his father.
