ORLANDO, Fla. _ UCF coach Josh Heupel confirmed quarterback Brandon Wimbush will start the Knights' game at FAU Saturday, with true freshman Dillon Gabriel playing as well against the Owls Saturday.
"I don't see anything different here at this point," Heupel said Thursday when asked whether Wimbush would be UCF's starter this week.
Wimbush, who went 12-of-23 passing for 168 yards and two touchdowns against Florida A&M last week, earned his first career win at UCF after arriving as a graduate transfer from Notre Dame in January.
But much like they did in Week 1, Heupel said Gabriel could also see action in the first half as well.
"That will probably happen again this week," the second-year coach said.
Gabriel was 9-of-13 passing for 127 yards and three touchdowns in his college debut against the Rattlers.
"I think both of them have earned the opportunity to continue to play football for us," Heupel said. "A lot of similarities and some unique differences too, but as we continue to move forward, we'll see all of those guys playing."
But Heupel dismissed the idea that there is still an ongoing competition between Wimbush, Gabriel and Quadry Jones at the quarterback spot.
"I feel like the strength of one position can never be one guy. I've said it multiple times through training camp that all three guys played at a championship level and I think some of our fans and media got a chance to see that in Week 1," Heupel said.
