UCF overcomes McKenzie Milton turnovers, Knights extend win streak to 15 games

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Three minutes and 11 seconds into UCF's home opener Saturday night, there was an undeniable nervous energy among the Knights fans assembled at Spectrum Stadium.

The Knights' first drive of the evening stalled after McKenzie Milton threw his first interception of the season. It was an uncharacteristic play by the normally efficient quarterback, who threw nine interceptions all of last season.

Not quite the start fans were expecting out of No. 19 UCF (2-0), an overwhelming favorite against South Carolina State (0-2), a Football Championship Subdivision foe.

A punt return, however, ignited the offense on the next possession as Otis Anderson weaved and bobbed his way 48 yards downfield before he was tackled at the Bulldogs' 41-yard line.

UCF players and coaches erupted on the sideline, no one more so than special teams coach Nick Toth, who leaped high into the air following the return. Three plays and 23 seconds later, junior tailback Adrian Killins plunged into the end zone to give UCF a 7-0 lead.

The Knights endured more bumps but eventually earned a 38-0 win over the Bulldogs, extending the nation's longest win streak to 15.

It was the third consecutive victory in a home opener for UCF. The game drew an announced crowd of 43,269, making it the second highest attendance for a home opener in school history.

South Carolina State drove down to the UCF 35-yard line before safety Kyle Gibson stepped in front of a Tyrece Nick pass to end the drive. It was the redshirt senior's fifth career interception and the second interception by the Knights this season.

Milton continued to struggle on the next drive, with another pass picked off time by South Carolina State safety Chris Adams.

It was the first time the junior quarterback has thrown multiple interceptions since he tossed three against Memphis in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game on Dec. 2.

Gibson was the beneficiary of the blocked field goal, with the redshirt senior following a line of blockers downfield to return the football to the South Carolina State 26-yard line.

Killins pushed the lead to 14-0 with a 26-yard touchdown run, waltzing into the end zone untouched. The drive took 35 seconds.

Matthew Wright added a 25-yard field goal, his first of the season, to extend the lead to 17-0.

Milton's woes continued on the next possession, tossing his third interception of the half. This time, the ball was hauled in by SCSU linebacker Lane Jones.

After forcing another Bulldogs punt, UCF put together an impressive 20-play drive capped by an Anderson one-yard touchdown run that extended the lead to 24-0 at the half.

Milton's performance picked up in the second half, with the quarterback hitting Gabriel Davis for a 13-yard touchdown pass. It was the 16th consecutive game with at least one UCF touchdown pass.

Milton finished the evening 21-for-39 passing for 243 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in three quarters.

Davis registered his first career 100-yard receiving game after earning 111 yards on nine catches.

The offense continued its torrid pace scoring on drives that lasted 23 seconds, 35 seconds, 1:32, 4:48, 42 seconds and 38 seconds.

The Knights' defense, which struggled with missed tackles a week earlier in the team's 56-17 win over UConn, played better at times against South Carolina State.

Richie Grant stepped in front of a Dewann Ford pass for his second interception of the season. Antwan Collier added another interception at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

After failing to register a sack against UConn the previous week, UCF managed four against SCSU as well as double-digit tackles for a loss.
